Deutsche OpenStack Tage in Berlin start on September 24, 2019 – well-known companies and IT professionals will gather for the cloud industry summit.

OpenStack is constantly evolving: According to the Open Stack Service Market 2019 study, the global market volume for OpenStack-based services will grow to 8 billion US dollars by 2025. The average annual growth rate is expected to be 29 percent. The OpenStack community currently has more than 100,000 members from 197 countries – maintaining more than 20 million lines of code. No wonder the OpenStack Foundation describes the community as one of the fastest growing open source communities in the world.

German OpenStack community’s most important industry meeting

The importance of OpenStack is reflected by the Deutsche OpenStack Tage conference, which takes place for the fourth time from September 24 to 26, 2019 and is considered the most important industry event in Germany. In 2017, the third OpenStack Tage in Munich brought together 285 participants from nine nations (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, US, Great Britain, Israel, Romania, Belgium and the Netherlands). "The Deutsche OpenStack Tage complement the worldwide OpenStack Summit, which is now known as the Open Infrastructure Summit," says Nils Magnus, cloud architect at Deutsche Telekom, one of the sponsors of the Deutsche OpenStack Tage.

This year, around 300 IT professionals are expected at the conference organized by B1 Systems, including developers, administrators, managers, company representatives and other specialists from the OpenStack community. In addition to presentations by Telekom, the program will also include exciting talks by speakers from BMW, Xing, Suse and Audi.

Workshops and trend themes: Ansible, Kubernetes & Co.

In addition, there will be four workshops. Three are dedicated to the topics of automation (Ansible), containerization (Kubernetes) and software defined storage (Ceph), while a fourth, introductory workshop will teach the basics of cloud computing with OpenStack.

"Current trend themes such as bare-metal servers will also provide a lot of topics for discussion. Companies are increasingly using them as platforms, for example to set up Kubernetes clusters," says Nils Magnus of Deutsche Telekom. "The Open Telekom Cloud not only integrates tools and services such as Kubernetes and Docker, but also the ecosystems and the tools and technologies that form them.” With the Cloud Container Engine (CCE), which is based on Kubernetes and compatible with Dockers, Open Telekom Cloud offers the possibility of setting up clusters both with virtual machines in the Elastic Cloud Server (ECS) category and with bare-metal servers, without getting lost in the details of installation and configuration.

Automation, artificial intelligence and quality assurance

Telekom will have its own booth at the conference and its OpenStack experts will be there. Nils Magnus will demonstrate how the Python programming language can be used in conjunction with OpenStack's Software Development Kit (SDK) to automate workloads in the cloud. Vladimir Hasko and Kristian Kucerak will demonstrate ways to simplify regression testing using the Robot Framework and write a test case in a live demo.

"Among the public cloud providers with OpenStack architecture in Germany, Telekom has by far the largest and most comprehensive offering in the form of the Open Telekom Cloud. This enables us to serve all company sizes from start-ups to large corporations," says Nils Magnus. "We also have access to Telekom's high-performance, secure network and its comprehensive security portfolio with its dedicated business unit Telekom Security – resources that other providers do not have.”

The openness of the standard remains decisive when it comes to the attractiveness of OpenStack: "All members of the OpenStack community use the same interfaces. There is no dependency, the risk of a vendor lock-in is low and existing customer systems can be easily integrated thanks to OpenStack," says Nils Magnus.

Evening get-together on the River Spree

Talking shop, establishing contacts and networking – the participants of the Deutsche OpenStack Tage can do this not only in the conference venue but also on board the MS Alexander von Humboldt: on the evening of September 25, 2019, the OpenStack professionals will have the opportunity for a relaxed get-together on the River Spree. Berlin's largest floating salon will be moored just a few minutes' walk from the conference hotel and will take participants on a trip through the city center and past Osthafen, Berliner Cathedral, Friedrichstrasse, the Reichstag and the Central Station to Humboldt Harbor.
